The New Planet Trampoline Story

In the town of Cleveland in about the year 2000, after playing with Volta Sound for a little while, Matt Cassidy took to recording some song ideas in the attic of Volta singer Mike Cormier's house. They were more fleshed out versions of songs that Cassidy had been recording for himself on 4 Track under the name "Planetarium" for a couple years. Among others, Ben Gmetro of Volta and the then just beginning Dreadful Yawns helped out on these sessions on organ, trombone or whatever else the sessions called for.

Not only was this a crucial time in the birth of what is now known as "The Davenport Collective," but, after a simple name change, these songs evolved into the foundation of The New Planet Trampoline.

NPT's aim was simple: create good, basic psychedelic rock. The songs were to be as energetic, basic and engaging as punk rock but retain the surrealism and confusion of conceptual or progressive rock. The instrumentation involved bass guitar and drums backing modal Farfisa organ lines and stabbing, echoed Fender guitar blast - all set behind peculiar lyrics involving ghost stories, paranoia, and other subjects of disorientation.

With Gmetro on organ and Cassidy on guitar, the New Planet Trampoline found its stride in 2003 when Dave Molnar and Charlie Druesedow - also of The Dreadful Yawns - came on board to contribute on bass and drums, respectively. The band started playing local shows and recording more and more songs, selling their demos at shows and garnering a small following in Cleveland.

After self-releasing the 5 song EP Clear as Candy (Davenport Records) in 2003, New Planet Trampoline nationally released their first full-length CD in 2004, The Curse of The New Planet Trampoline on Ben Vendetta's new Elephant Stone Records label. The CD received favorable reviews, and New Planet Trampoline mounted several national shows to promote the disc's release.

Here in late 2005, New Planet Trampoline has just self-released their second EP, Blimps and Aeroplanes (Davenport Records), is playing several more shows both in Cleveland and abroad and has started recording their next full-length CD which is certain to be released sometime in early 2006.
